Broken Document Breaks Out into Poetry combines video documentation, wall engraved text, textile work, and wooden objects to create a sense of complexity and frustration from the years-long research dedicated to women’s unknown, undocumented, lost, forgotten, and marginalized history. My artistic practice is entangled around the issues of suppression, control, and construction of collective memory regarding women’s resistance strategies and politics. The ongoing research project “Document Missing” (2014–) is a compilation of works produced in different mediums: performances, photography, objects, textile, and drawings. They emphasize the lack of recognition of women’s history in Macedonian society and its links to current forms of political activism and theory. In my performances based on found or lost documents and oral interpretations of events, I ‘inhabit’ the character of Rosa Plaveva (1878-1970) – a Macedonian fighter for women’s and workers’ rights – whose narrative is forgotten, or simply erased, from the official history and the national state archives. Creating situations that ‘were and were not’ and fluctuating through time and space I become a flexible and porous entity, a medium through which different identities are brought back to life.
