Collecting Out of/as Solidarity

Sabeth Buchmann and Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* on “No Feeling Is Final. The Skopje Solidarity Collection” at the Kunsthalle Wien

Museum collections, and thus also the processes behind such accumulations of objects, are rarely the subject of reviews, since the latter are committed to a certain topicality. In their review of the Vienna exhibition, which conveys the collection history of the Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje from multiple perspectives, art historian Sabeth Buchmann and artist* Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* demonstrate how rewarding it can be to examine the establishment of fundamental museum structures – especially when the latter deviate from the norm, as was the case in Skopje: founded after the devastating 1963 earthquake there, the local museum was built on the principle of donation. As a flip side to this, our authors emphasize that structural conditions are quickly lost sight of by focusing on solidarity principles.
